Unit 1: Photoshop Module 1

This unit forms part of the Course in MCAST Award in Adobe Photoshop Expert. Once a learner complete all the units in this course satisfactorily; that is has obtained a pass mark in the assessment and respected the 80% attendance s/he will achieve an award pegged at MQF Level 4, 7ECVET Credits

This course covers the fundamentals of digital graphic design in computing. In this unit learners will cover both theoretical understanding of design technologies and hands-on experience with the appropriate application. Topics include perception, cognition, and communication issues, designs, digitizing and manipulating images, materials, copyright and ethics.

The course includes practical labs as well as authoring various digital graphics presentation and design for the various environments including World Wide Web, Industrial Design and Digital Photography. Students will learn about the different types of design and how to construct effective Digital graphics.

This is a 24 hr guided learning course.  Students need to invest further hours in the course, which will include private study and home assignments.

Lessons are held twice a week at the Institute of Information and Communication Technology, Paola between 1800 hrs and 2000 hrs.  Each lesson is of 2 hours duration.

Areas of studies;

Learning Outcome 1: Make use of Photoshop tools

Unit Content

  • Get familiar with Photoshop working environment, discovering how to open a document, how to use tools and tools panel.
  • Acquiring knowledge of almost all the tools in the tool box and customize tools in the option menu bar.


Learning Outcome 2: Work with selections and layer manipulation

Unit Content

  • Isolate areas in an image, painting copying and pasting. Discover the fundamentals of making good selections. 
  • Add adjustment layer style, adding a text layer, understanding and organizing the stacking order of layers.


Learning Outcome 3: Create and define brushes, vectors shapes and patterns

Unit Content

  • Using Photoshop’s painting tools, such as painting brushes, cloning and healing tools.
  • Using the pen tool to create curves and accurate selections, understand and defining vector shapes.


Learning Outcome 4: Make use of action and Adobe bridge to create image gallery and actions

Unit Content

  • Manage and organize files, utilize and modify Meta data for faster searches, preview images and create photo galleries.
  • Create new actions and make use of automated batch work.


The following are the suggested pre-requisites and/or entry requirements needed:


  • Completed compulsory education                   

Entry Requirements:

  • Computer literate         

Course participants may be awarded either an MCAST Certificate of Attendance or an MCAST Certificate of Achievement.

MCAST Certificate of Attendance

  • An MCAST Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to those candidates who attend at least 80% of the lessons.

MCAST Certificate of Achievement

  • An MCAST Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to those candidates who satisfy the 80% attendance criteria and also choose to sit and pass the course assessment/s.
  • Students who opt not to sit for the assessment or fail (the assessment/s) will however be awarded the MCAST Certificate of Attendance provided that they fulfill the minimum attendance criteria as stated above.

If the student intends to obtain a Certificate of Achievement, she/he is required to sit for an assessment/s.  Assessment/s may take various forms such as a home assignment, class assignment, practical test and time constrained test.  However, the assessment/s is not compulsory and an applicant may choose not to sit for it.

There are no additional costs or special materials/equipment to bring.
