ECDL Advanced

This course is for learners to achieve the ECDL Advanced. Learners can do this course after having achieved the ECDL Core (Standard) certification. In this course learners can progress to further enhance their ICT skills in four main applications namely, Word processing, Spreadsheets, Databases and Presentations. Apart from standing out from the rest of the crowd, learners can potentially increase their employability. The course is ideal for clerks, office workers, and secretaries who would like to be:

iii. Capable of confidently exploiting the full potential of the mentioned applications
iv. Expert at producing attractive, professional-quality outputs

This is a 60 hour course. Lessons are held as indicated on the prospectus and website.

AM 3: ECDL Advanced – Word Processing

Apart from using the standard features of MS Word, candidates will learn how to use advanced formatting techniques including inserting watermarks, table of contents, indexes, footnotes amongst others. One can enhance productivity by using macros, fields and forms together with templates and mail merge. The linking and embedding of data from other applications will be carried out complete with documentation security.

Learning Outcome 1: Produce professional looking documents, reports and forms using Microsoft Word

Learning Outcome 2: Apply advanced editing techniques to all kinds of documents

Unit Content

• Apply advanced text, paragraph, column and table formatting
• Convert text to a table and vice versa
• Work with watermarks, sections, headers/footers in a document

Learning Outcome 3: Identify the features to link, embed and integrate data within a document using Microsoft Word

Unit Content

• Use linking and embedding features to integrate data
• Apply advanced mail merge techniques
• Use of ASK and IF fields in a mail merge

Learning Outcome 4: Use referencing techniques to enhance readability in documents using Microsoft Word

Unit Content

• Work with referencing features like footnotes, endnotes and captions
• Create indexes and cross-references
• Review documents and work with master/sub-documents
• Compare and combine documents
• Apply document security

AM 4: ECDL Advanced – Spreadsheets

MS Excel offers advanced conditional formatting techniques including various logical, statistical, financial and mathematical functions. Productivity can be greatly enhanced by working with named cell ranges, macros and templates. Excel will also be used to work with tables and lists, analyse, filter and sort data as well as creating and using scenarios.

Learning Outcome 1: Create and maintain complex spreadsheets

• Apply advanced formatting options such as conditional formatting and customized number formatting and handle worksheets
• Transpose data
• Use linking, embedding and importing features to integrate data
• Use relevant functions such as those associated with logical, statistical, financial and mathematical operations
• Use of date and time functions
• Collaborate on and review spreadsheets
• Apply spreadsheet security features

Learning Outcome 2: Describe how to manipulate charts using spreadsheets

Unit Content

• Create charts and apply advanced chart formatting features

Learning Outcome 3: Use auditing techniques to check for errors in spreadsheets

Unit Content

• Work with tables and lists to analyse, filter and sort data
• Validate and audit spreadsheet data
• Track changes in a worksheet

Learning Outcome 4: Analyse data in different scenarios using various spreadsheets functions

• Use of lookup functions
• Enhance productivity by working with named cell ranges, macros and templates
• Create a pivot table
• Create and use scenarios

AM5: ECDL Advanced - Database

Candidates must understand the key concepts of relational databases development and usage. MS Access will be used to design queries to create/update/delete tables. Advanced features such as controls in reports and forms to perform calculations will be used. Macros will increase productivity and the importing/exporting features to integrate data from/to other MS applications will be applied.

• Create a relational database using advanced table creation features and complex relationships between tables
• Use controls and subforms to enhance forms and improve functionality

• Create subreports and enhance report presentation

Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate field properties, relationships, joins and action queries in a database

Unit Content

• Create validation rules and text
• Create a lookup field from a table
• Design and use queries to create a table, update, delete and append data
• Refine queries using wildcards, parameters and calculations
• Use of a calculated field in a query
• Use of a parameter query

AM 6: ECDL Advanced – Presentations

Candidates will be guided to plan presentations after understanding target audience and considering the venue. Advanced features of MS PowerPoint such as drawing and image manipulation tools will be used. Animation, inserting movies, sound, and clip art will also be applied to presentations. Furthermore candidates will learn how to control a slide show by customising various settings and timings.

2. Are there any entry requirements or is any previous knowledge of the subject necessary?
The following are the suggested pre-requisites and/or entry requirements needed;

Pre-requisites:

• Information Technology Basics and office applications
• Basic knowledge of Mathematics and English (level 3).

Entry Requirements:

• ECDL Core (Standard) certification

Candidates attending 80% of the course will be awarded an MCAST Certificate of Attendance.

Those candidates, who successfully complete and pass a given module, will be awarded a certificate by ECDL Malta. Moreover those candidates, who achieve all four modules, will be awarded the Expert Certificate.

There will be a mock test in class for each module Candidates will be prepared to sit for the ECDL Advanced certification online through the official Enlight site. To achieve the ECDL Advanced Certification Candidates have to sit for an exam that will be done in class under invigilation on a specific date/time whilst the mock test can be tried online from home before the actual exam

Candidates will be prepared to sit for the ECDL Advanced certification online through the official Enlight site. This procedure will require additional administrative work to collect fees for the exam (including booking) and mock test per module.
