Pastel Techniques - Introduction

In this course learners will acquire knowledge, skills and techniques using pastels. Learners will learn about history of pastel and material itself. Each session will be introduced one of the pastel techniques such as impasto, crossed-hatched application, layering, linear technique, glazing, scrumbling, etc.  Learners will also learn properties of value in soft, hard and oil pastels paintings and drawings by painting and drawing simple still lives with alive and not alive objects, drapes in different light scenarios.  Pastels vocabulary will be introduced together with knowledge of line, shape, proposition, lights, shadows, semi-light and semi-shadows while also learning how to combine light with shadows.

Learners will develop deep knowledge about colour combinations and using colours in different pastel techniques using simple objects.  Also, learners will be able to create compositions using different colours and become familiar with soft, hard and oil pastels, pastel paper such as velvet, sanded paper, torchon and various tools.  Finally, learners will be able to adapt pastels tools and equipment to achieve optimum results and use surface and texture techniques to create space and depth illusions.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Outline the history of pastel drawing, the material used and the techniques as these evolved till the present day 
  2. Use the correct terminology to name the properties of value in soft, hard and oil pastels paintings and drawings
  3. Adapt pastels tools and equipment to achieve optimum results as well as create space and depth illusions.
  4. Create compositions using different pastel techniques and simple objects to draw and paint simple still lives with alive and not alive objects and drapes in different light scenarios.
